I figured I'd post about this since it is the new year and a lot of people like to make resolutions about losing weight.

Okay, so you want to lose some weight?  Well forget about all those fancy and hard to follow diets.  Screw Atkins.  To hell with the low fat diet.
If you want to lose weight, all you have to know is this simple formula.  Ready?  Okay, here it is:

3500 calories = 1 pound

That's it.  So if you want to lose 1 pound, just lose 3500 calories.  There are plenty of ways to do it, but the easiest way is to figure out your average daily calorie intake.  This may seem daunting at first, but just look at the nutritional labels of your food for a few days and keep a notepad tracking everything you ate.  Then grab a calculator and figure out how many calories you ate over a few days, then figure out the average per day.

Once you get used to counting your calories, it is very simple.

Now what do you do, you ask?  Well, cut off 500 calories from each day.  This can be as simple as not putting cheese on anything you eat, or quitting soft drinks in favor of water.  Whatever.  Just get rid of 500 calories.  Why?  Because of this:

500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories

And remember that 3500 calories is 1 pound.  So if you do this from now on, you will lose 1 pound each day.

It's as simple as that.  Now you can do other things to trim more calories.  Exercise will burn away extra calories.  Certain exercises burn more calories than others.  So if you start exercising AND trim 500 calories from each day, then you will lose weight at a faster rate.  Also, you can trim further if you really want...

But let's be realistic.  Take small steps first.  Start at 500 calories a day and wait until you see some results.  After a few months, when you've lost 15 pounds and you're starting to get excited, then you can think about cutting more calories.

Also, if you screw up and lose control, going over your calories one day, don't worry.  Just take the 500 from that day (or whatever you went over) and divide it up amongst the rest of that week.  As long as you come out 3500 under each week, you will continue to lose a pound a week.

Okay, now I'll answer a few common questions about diet:

1.  But shouldn't I be cutting back on fat?

You can if you want.  Eating fewer fats won't make you lose weight.  In fact, many types of fat are actually essential to your diet.  Such as omega 3 fats.  However, cutting out saturated fats would definitely be a good thing for your heart and your entire circulatory system.
Just don't expect to replace all your fats with carbs or protein and begin losing weight.  It won't happen.  Weight comes from calories, not fat.

2.  What about the low carb diet?  You can eat as much as you want!

No you can't.  Besides, the low carb diet is almost impossible to follow unless you have iron will.  It is much easier just to cut some calories and exercise a little.

3.  Help!  I can't cut my calories enough, what do I do??

If you find that you just can't cut your calories down without starving yourself, try looking at your food choices.  Soups, for instance, will do a lot to sate your hunger.  However, since they are mostly water, they are also low in calories usually.  Try replacing a lot of your foods with 'wetter' foods.  Basically any food that contains a lot of water - most vegatables, fruits, cheese, etc.  However, make sure you know what kind of caloric content they have.
Eating foods high in fiber can help too, as fiber tends to swell in your stomach, making you feel "fuller."  I know what you're thinking - wet foods, high fiber, sounds like a recipe for trouble!  Or an active bowel system anyway.  Yeah, you might have some issues at first if your body needs to clean itself out.  But you'll get over it after a week or so.  Not only that, but you will probably start feeling more energetic than before, once you get over the initial adjustment phase.

Also, if you drink soft drinks (or pop, soda, whatever you choose to call it) try replacing it with water.  Or tea.  Green tea, for instance, has 0 calories and tastes better than just water.  Whereas most soft drinks have enough calories to make an impact on your diet.  Don't believe me?  Figure out how many soft drinks you drink in a week.  Now grab the calorie count from the back of a can, then do the math.  It might surprise you.  Sometimes cutting that 500 each day really can be as simple as not drinking soft drinks anymore.

4.  I can't go a whole week doing this.  What am I doing wrong?

That might be your problem.  If you find your willpower waning, try just doing your calorie cutting Monday through Friday, cutting 700 calories each day instead of 500 Monday through Sunday.  Then on Saturday and Sunday, take some time off.  Don't go hog wild, obviously, or your hard work all week will be for nothing.  But if you normally ate 2500 calories a day before your diet, then go ahead and eat 2500 on Saturday and Sunday, then go back to just 1800 Monday through Friday.

This tool seems halfway decent.  I haven't looked it over completely yet, but it claims to help organize your calorie intake and tracks your progress.  I'm going to download it later and check it out.

Actually, that whole page has a lot of good advice about watching your diet.

ha Shadow, doesn't physical work-outs actually allows you to gain weight right after the body fat transform into muscles?

Weight training helps women in toning their body, while enlarges the muscle scales in men. To the look of the body weight, women may lose weight, while men are different sometimes...nothing is always true. ^_~

but hey, it's nice you are motivating people in dieting and physcial health

not too sure I agree betta12345. Body fat doesn't transform into muscle mass. Protein and the process of 'tearing and repairing' exercises muscles are the main factors in muscle building in my opinion. The body fat is used for energy and thus lossed (even if it is a tiny fraction). Physical work-outs, depending on their type can either put weight on (by muscle mass) or take weight off (say a cardiovascular exercise).

Weight training does offer an extra incentive for reducing body fat. By weight training you are given an 'afterburn' effect where as for up to the proceeding 12 hours. This 'afterburn' hightens the metabolism and burns more calories. However though, some exercises have little effect in starting this effect and only burn calories during the workout.

As for cutting out carbs to lose weight, it's very unhealthy. You will lose weight, however the weight is muscle mass NOT fat. Since muscle mass weighs more than fat it shows quickly on the scales. By cutting carbs, you lower your metabolism even as you make your body efficient in storing fat. What's worse, you will gain back double the weight you lost.

Gavin is correct.  You can't transform your fat directly into muscle.  To actually build muscle, you need a decent protein intake.  The protein you take in will be used to build new muscle, while the fat will simply be lost - unless you're consuming a high amount of calories (above maintenance)

Cutting carbs is bad bad bad.  Like Gavin said, you lose a lot of muscle mass through catabolism.  Eventually your body will learn how to burn fat for energy though and you'll also burn fat... but unfortunately, you NEED carbs.  Fat cannot provide the energy your brain needs, for instance.

Anyway, while you should exercise to tone your muscle and/or gain some muscle, if you want to lose weight, the most effective way is through exercise.
Cutting 500 calories a day is easy.  Burning 500 calories a day through exercise is not.  Most exercises burn fewer than 100 calories per hour and very few exercises take more than a few minutes to complete, depending on how many sets/reps you do.

The point of exercising in conjunction with a diet is to raise your metabolism, so once you stop cutting calories and start eating maintenance again, you don't gain a ton of weight.

well last year I started eating healthier...more fruit and veg, cut out the fizzy drinks and drank more water that sort of thing and it seemed to work...lost a fair amount of weight....I also started exercising more...nothing strenuous just going out for more, longer walks and I have to say just by doing that I managed to lose about about 40lbs.

I didn't give up all the foods I loved...I allowed myself a naughty day every week where I could eat whatever I wanted. I found that stopped me having cravings for "naughty" foods as I wasn't actually denying myself any of them completely.

It may not work for everyone I guess but did for me.... Grin

40 lbs is a lot of weight to lose.  That's some pretty impressive results.

I think soft drinks are one of the worst things we ever invented, regarding our health.  They are loaded with a lot more calories than people realize.  They also rot your teeth and a bunch of other bad things.  Diet soft drinks aren't so bad, but you're still better off drinking water or tea instead.

I would be willing to bet that if Americans quit drinking soft drinks, this "obesity epidemic" we're having over here would be greatly diminished.

Of course it would also help if we didn't have to drive everywhere... but everything is so far apart that walking is almost impossible.

Just thought I'd give you an update of how my weight loss is going...lol

I'm not doing anything different...just eating as healthily as I can (if you ignore the excess amounts chocolate ice cream I've been eating recently Wink )

My total weight loss is now around 65lbs....yay me! ....it does seem to be coming off slower now and I am having to do more excercise to keep it coming off but I only have about 20lbs more to go before I hit my target weight....woohoo!

I have to admit it has been hard work but it's worth it...I'm feeling much healthier and have much more energy..... Sorry just had to blow my own trumpet here Grin

If I pluck up the courage (and get my pc working properly) I'll post before and after pics...well the before and almost there pics...heh!

Yeah as your weight gets lower, it becomes more difficult to lose it.  That's why people who want to get to single digit bodyfat percentages have to use all kinds of crazy diet and workout schemes to get that low without sacrificing all their lean body mass.

Check out UD2.0 if you want to get really low bodyfat percentages.  I may try once I get big enough.  The site is www.bodyrecompositi on.com but I think you have to buy the book to learn the actual diet.  If I buy the book, I'll share the diet secrets on here for everyone to see.
