"Mad World"
« on: January 10, 04 05:08:02 PM »
This is a song that was recently featured in the movie Donnie Darko, which is an amazing movie that I would very much recommend.  The song was originally done by Tears For Fears but the movie used a cover of the song by a Gary Jules guy as it's theme song.

Download the Gary Jules/Donnie Darko version - http://www.shadowpawn.net/images/madworld1.mp3

The original Tears For Fears version - http://www.shadowpawn.net/images/madworld2.mp3

Here are the lyrics:

"Mad World"

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tommorow, no tommorow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Tears for Fears did the song first.  They were a band from the 80s, so the song is pretty old.

You should definitely watch the movie.

Donnie Darko....... I must have seen it less than a month ago,
but it quickly became one of my favorites...

I also liked the Gary Jules version better... its more mind-stopping

I don't know if this is the same in America, but the Gary Jules version was released in England and was Christmas number 1 which restored my faith that beautiful music like that is still appreciated by many people.

I don't think it even saw the charts over here... but then I think everyone knows how the charts in the USA are crap.

*laughs too* This was a nice and very very rare exception for exactly the same rule in England!! The charts here rarely see any music to speak of!!!

Can I get the movie and music you mentioned in the US? I have tried before with underground music from England and could not find it here.

Donnie Darko was an American release.  As for the song... I don't think they released it on the actual Donnie Darko soundtrack, but you can find it very easily on Kazaa.  Or just wait until my shadowpawn.net domain is back up, then download the mp3 from the link I provided above.

The movie you can find in any rental store.

The song is actually on the soundtrack. I really love the movie, though I've had to exp0lain the plot upwards of 50 times now. If you go to the website (www.donniedarko.com) theres basically a flash puzzle to get to a special sound byte. Its also a wicked cool site. Just remember that when all else fails right click and hit play.

What all is included on the soundtrack?  I read that a lot of the theme music, for instance the Tears for Fears song, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc etc was not included...

http://www.donniedarko.com is an interesting place.  I spent a couple hours there, I think.  However, as for the plot, I prefer to keep it a little open.  The creators of the movie seemed to have a certain direction for the plot, although they weren't entirely clear throughout the movie.  I like to think that things were a bit different than some of their explanations in the commentary and on the site.

Regardless, the movie is simply awesome.  I almost have the dialogue memorized at this point.  Last time my wife and I watched it, I was telling her what the characters were going to say right before they said it.  She became concerned that I was a little too 'into' the movie at that point.

We rented it and watched it again tonight. Let me just say that the dvd is the way to go. All the extra scenes... I just wish there was some way to play the movie with the deleted scenes added back in...

The DVD is definitely better.  You have the commentary, deleted scenes, the book 'Philosophy of Time Travel' and so on.

I especially liked the deleted scene where his doctor tells him that the pills he has been taking were placebos.

maybe it could be a board where we discuss music, and the plots and stuff in movies... like why something in a certain movie wouldn't work and stuff like that...

You could call the section, 'Media'  or something.

Well, in response to the first post that was a really sweet song. I've forwarded it to some of my friends, and they liked it, but none of us have ever heard of Donnie Darko. Did it come out in the theaters here in the US?

Ok, I take that back, I have heard of Donnie Darko, but only because Robert told me about it and showed me the site--which I found thoroughly confusing... But despite all that, and despite the fact I accidently read your little spoiler, Shadow, darn you, I still want to see the movie. Sounds like my kind of film, weird and thoughtful and just bizzare... Am I right in this? I shall have to go see if the nearest blockbuster has a copy.

Anyway, thanks for sharing...I definately like the cover more than the original, but then again I never was much of a one for 80's music... Thanks for the heads up, SP.

btw... about the Media thing--

perhaps it would be better to keep the movies and music seperate, but just add another section for films.. Or is this what you meant, when you suggested Media? Sort of like Media as a category along with Mind, Body, etc? Hmm... (confused)
